Asia Commons

Dear Friends,

Greetings!!!

a couple of weeks back, I did attend an "Asian Conference on the Digital Commons" at Bangkok, Thailand. I have landed there at the early hours of 5th June and found the accommodation at 'Chaophya Hotel' where the conference is supposed to be started.

Thailand people are 1:30 ahead of us (GMT +7:00). The accomomodation is fine and the conference started at 9:30 AM on 6th June. The event is scheduled from6-8 June 2006. I have seen more than 150 participants from various countries representing Government, Private, Consumer, NGO, IT organisations.

The concept of the seminar is to access to knowledge (A2K) and share the information between asian communities using open source tools. Naturally, IOSN is one of the organisers of this event. There are some case studies on how the grey economy effecting some developing societies and lot of discussions on Intellectual Property/patent issues. The organisers are succeeded in extracting valuable inputs from the priveleged participants by means of Round Table Discussions, Cartographs, Speed Sharing etc. etc., It is felt that the system of 'Patenting' will only helps the developed countries not developing countries!!

If you want to give some conditional access to your published creativity in the form of Audio, Video or Blogs, it is suggested that the 'Creative Commons' model can be followed. There are six types of licencing systems you can affiliate to your authorship like 'Share Alike, Non-Commercial, Public Domain' etc. Hence, you are sharing the knowledge/information with the people while not loosing some of your exclusive rights on your creativity/IP.

It is suggested that to make this realized, a certain legal frame work need to be designed and relaxing the IP laws at the same time. You take the Open Source Systems to achieve this goal. I am very much new to this theme but got inspired by the interactive sessions, I have conducted a discussion on 'Growing Asia Comons& Communities: Promoting Individual Interest." You can read the gist of the discussion at -

I'll post some other news from the same event.
